Stand on The green
under the beautiful old Oak Tree and look in any direction
and you’ll see something of Roade’s history,
This part of Roade used to be the centre of the village
in days of yesteryear. There’s the Cock Inn,
the first reference to this Pub is on maps of Roade
dating back to 1720.
On the other side
of the Green is what is known as “Fred Gray’s
Cottage, Fred Gray was the Carpenter, Wheelwright
and Undertaker to the village way back when; The family
can be traced back to the early 1700’s –
his family moved into the Cottage on the Green in
the mid 18th century and it remained in the family
until quite recently.
In another direction
is yet again a beautiful old property, a superb stone
House, its believed that in years gone it was called
“Fairlawns” but now is known as “The
Old Manor House”.
We have
the Methodist Church and other Interesting properties
that grace this part of the village, in addition to
private homes there is a Chemists shop a News Agent
and General store, there’s a Haberdashery shop
and a Ladies hairdressers, there’s also a Phone
Box.
